When we got to the HQ where the camp was being held we waited for all the candidates to arrive and we had to write or names on to a name tag. Once the potential candidates arrived (there were 36 of us and only 4 got through!) we sat through a presentation about the week-end, one of our leaders said that we may be pushed to our limit and out of our comfort zone- what I think he meant was that of the cuisine or some of the out door activities- for me it was an ice-breaker game. You had to write the name of a famous person onto a sticker and then stick it on someone elses' back, now I know it's a stupid phobia so no nasty comments please, but I am scared of stickers. However, I gritted my teeth and made it to the end of the game.
After that, we went to pitch our tents- a lot of people hadn't brought one so they we had to share- luckily I shared with 2 of my closest friends. The Leaders had set out a square plot with rope it was literally 10m square! So we all pitched our tents together and then we had lunch.
I enjoyed mealtimes on camp because it was basically an all you can eat sandwich buffet and you could have practically anything on your sandwich- I had cheese and tomatoes. We got cake too which pretty much made my lunch! We would then go onto activities.
Do you know those little eggs inside a kinder egg that have little toys in? Well one of the activities was to get one of these little eggs up a pipe by putting water in it... easy right? The pipe had holes in it and no bottom we spent a full half hour trying to get that egg up without success.
We did another activity that consisted trying out wassabi which was hilarious because people took massive bits of it and shovelled it in to their mouths, now if you are familiar with wassabi you know how powerful it can be!
After more activities, some people went to help make tea, and others went to play football, as I did hardly any cooking throughout the weekend I just stayed as the washer woman! We collapsed all the tables and we had to sit on the floor for tea with chopsticks. The chefs in the kitchen had made a traditional Japanese soup for starters and a stir fry for the main and I can't remember what we had for pudding but I'm almost certain that wasn't Japanese.
We got told to bring a musical instrument to camp if we had one and I play the ukulele so I prepared a few songs that I thought suitable for around a campfire. See links Tractor Tractor and When I'm cleaning windows.
The next day we did more activities similar to the ones the day before and we put down our tents. We had another presentation explaining about the selection process, if we were successful we'd get a phone call before 8 o'clock that night.
When I got home, I took the phone literally everywhere with me but it wasn't until I'd fallen asleep on the sofa, watching a Bond movie, that the phone rang- I started to cry almost immediately, it felt amazing!
That was my selection week-end :D
